Best Headset Microphone for Fitness Instructors: How to Choose the Right One

Choosing a fitness headset microphone isn't as simple as buying the most expensive one or picking the biggest brand.

After more than 30 years supplying fitness audio systems to UK health clubs, leisure centres and instructors, I've learnt that the best headset isn't necessarily the most expensive one. It's the one that's right for how it's going to be used.

Start with one simple question

Whenever someone asks me which headset microphone they should buy, the first question I ask is:

How many classes will this microphone be teaching every week?

An instructor teaching six classes a week has very different requirements to a busy commercial club where the same headset may be shared between multiple instructors and used continuously from early morning until late evening.

That's why I don't always recommend the same microphone to everyone.

If your budget is limited and you're only teaching occasionally, there are lower-cost options that may suit you perfectly.

However, if you're relying on your microphone several times a week, my advice is usually to buy a headset that's designed specifically for commercial fitness. In the long run, it often works out to be the more economical option.

Sweat is the biggest killer

One of the biggest misconceptions is that fitness microphones simply wear out.

In reality, most failures I see are caused by sweat eventually finding its way into the  microphone.

That's why the way a headset is designed is often far more important than the headline specifications.

My recommendation for most instructors

For the majority of fitness instructors teaching up to around twenty classes each week, I'd normally recommend the EMic Fitness Headset Microphone

Why?

Because it's one of the toughest fitness headsets I've worked with.

It delivers excellent vocal clarity, is extremely comfortable to wear and stands up remarkably well to the day-to-day knocks that inevitably happen in commercial fitness environments.

Many instructors also tell me they prefer the clarity of the EMic over other popular headset microphones when teaching energetic classes where clear instruction is every bit as important as volume.

Why I might not recommend the Shure SM31FH

This is one of the headsets I'm often asked about.

However, it's not a headset I recommend for fitness instruction.

After more than 30 years supplying headset microphones to UK health clubs, leisure centres and fitness instructors, I've found there are better options specifically designed for the demands of commercial group exercise.

For me, vocal clarity is one of the biggest differences. Instructors need to be heard clearly over loud music without feeling they have to push their voice, and many have told me they prefer the way the Emic reproduces speech.

If someone asks which headset I'd choose for commercial fitness, my recommendation will almost always be an Emic , Aeromic or a Cyclemic, depending on how the microphone will be used.

When would I recommend an Aeromic?

The Aeromic has earned its reputation for one reason.

Sweat resistance.

Its all-steel cable, Carbon Collar protection and industry-leading sweat protection make it an outstanding choice for demanding commercial fitness environments.

It's important to understand that it's designed differently to the EMic.

The yellow boom is a precision alloy tube that's manufactured to position the microphone capsule correctly. That's why every Aeromic is marked "Do Not Bend."

Used correctly, that's rarely a problem. Once adjusted to fit, it should simply be put on and taken off without repeatedly reshaping the boom.

Where instructors understand how it's designed to be handled, the Aeromic is one of the best heavy-duty fitness microphones available.

Another option for busy clubs

Sometimes the best solution isn't buying a different microphone.

It's changing how they're used.

For clubs where microphones are shared between lots of instructors, one approach I've recommended successfully is keeping two or three EMics in rotation rather than relying on one headset all day.

While one microphone is being used, the others have time to dry naturally before their next class.

That spreads the workload across several headsets, gives the club an immediate spare if one is accidentally damaged and, in my experience, can significantly extend the working life of the microphones.

Teaching spin?

Cycle studios create a unique environment.

Because instructors spend much of the class leaning forward over the handlebars, sweat naturally runs towards the microphone.

That's exactly why the Cyclemic was developed.

Its distinctive J-shaped boom helps direct sweat away from the microphone capsule, making it the headset I'd normally recommend for dedicated cycling instructors.

Don't forget the accessories

Even the best headset microphone benefits from being looked after properly.

Using a quality fitness mic belt  helps protect your wireless transmitter while teaching, and replacing windscreens regularly improves both hygiene and microphone performance.

Still not sure which microphone is right for you?

Every instructor teaches differently, and every club has different requirements. If you'd like some advice before you buy, just get in touch. After more than 30 years supplying fitness audio systems, I'm always happy to point people in the right direction, even if it's simply confirming you've chosen the right microphone.
